Etherington wants move

Etherington joined Spurs from Peterborough

Tottenham winger Matthew Etherington has handed in a transfer request.

The England Under-21 player has asked for a move away from White Hart Lane after finding his first-team opportunities limited under manager Glenn Hoddle.

Etherington has only started five Premiership games since arriving from Peterborough for £500,000 in 1999.

"Having thought long and hard over the summer break I have decided that my career will be best served away from Spurs," said Etherington.

"I am desperate for first-team football and I have had limited chances over the last two seasons.

"It has been made clear to me that with the new additions to the squad and the system employed at the club, my chances will again be limited this season.

"I think it will be in everyone's best interests if I move on."

Last season Etherington spent a loan spell with Bradford, playing 13 games before returning to Tottenham at the end of December.
