Sheringham named captain
Sheringham is happy to be back in a Spurs shirt
Striker Teddy Sheringham has been installed as Tottenham's new captain.
The former Manchester United front man, who returned to White Hart Lane this summer for a second spell with the club, takes over the armband from the departed Sol Campbell.
"He can identify things on the pitch and he's got the respect of the players instantly from what he has achieved," Hoddle added: "He's got a football brain, he's intelligent, he understands the game and he can help others." But the 35-year-old striker may have to wait to take up his duties as an Achilles injury threatens to keep him out of Spurs' Premiership opener against Aston Villa. Darren Anderton is also struggling to be fit and Hoddle admitted: "They have no more than an outside chance." Les Ferdinand and Tim Sherwood will share the Spurs vice-captaincy. Sheringham spent five years at White Hart Lane before joining United in June 1997 for £3.5m.
