Paul Buckle confident Torquay can build on progress

Torquay United boss Paul Buckle is confident the club can build on their impressive pre-season form as they embark on their League Two campaign.

The Gulls beat Plymouth Argyle, Yeovil and Bristol City whilst preparing for the forthcoming season.

Buckle told BBC Devon: "We've played a lot of hard sides in pre-season, done very well and scored lots of goals.

"The boys that played last year have invaluable experience, so I'm sure we can cause teams problems this season."

Torquay, who finished 17th on their return to league football last term, have introduced several new faces over the summer, the most recent being the return of Plainmoor old-boy Martin Gritton on loan from Chesterfield.

"I'm happy with the new additions," said Buckle. "Within the budget, we got the targets that we wanted.

"We've got a small squad, one that's really young and enthusiastic, but we've also got experienced heads at either end of the field."

And Buckle revealed he has a good idea of who will take the field for Saturday's opener at home against Northampton.

"There's probably one slot left if I'm honest," said Buckle. "There's three players fighting for that one position and that will depend on what system we go with.

"Anyone that's left out, it won't be because they haven't done it this pre-season, it'll be simply because we need to choose 11 tactically, and only 11 can start."
