Torquay sack Saunders
Wes Saunders
Wes Saunders has been unable to halt Torquay's side
Relegation threatened Torquay United are looking for a new manager after sacking Wes Saunders.

Colin Lee, will take charge of Saturday's home match against Torquay, but owner Mike Bateson does not think the former Wolves boss will stay on as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

The club is rock bottom of Division Three and in serious danger of slipping into the Conference next season.

"I can confirm Wes Saunders has been dismissed as manager," said Torquay owner Mike Bateson.

"The reasons for Wes' dismissal are apparent to all. We are in a perilous position at the bottom of Division Three.

"The important thing is to avoid relegation and we will be doing everything within our power to do that."

No urgency

Lee was recently brought in as a coach in a bid to halt the club's alarming slide to the foot of the Nationwide League.

And Bateson hopes he will stay on long enough for a permanent manager to be appointed.

"I would like to think that Colin, who I will be meeting with tomorrow, will take on the job until the end of the season but I am not too hopeful he will.

"In the meantime he has said he will look after the side on Saturday against Hull and I think he would also help us out the following Saturday when we are away to Cardiff.

"I have already had applicants for the job but the fact that Colin can look after the side takes away some of the urgency of making an appointment.

"Ideally I would like to appoint a manager with experience who will still be here next season, but that is ideally."

Former Torquay player Saunders was appointed manager in 1998 following the departure of Kevin Hodges to Plymouth.
