Swindon Town have named midfielder Jonathan Douglas as their new captain for the 2010/11 season.

The Republic of Ireland international, 28, takes over from Gordon Greer, who has joined Brighton & Hove Albion.

Douglas was vice-captain last season and led the Robins out at Wembley in their League One play-off final defeat by Millwall when Greer was suspended.

The former Leeds captain told BBC Wiltshire: "It's up to me to carry on what Gordon did last year."

Swindon manager Danny Wilson said: "He is an ideal replacement and it won't be a surprise to anybody."

And Douglas continued: "There's a number of players who could have done the job but he's placed the responsibility on me.

"It's a great honour for me. I'm looking forward to another season when hopefully we can go one better.

"I don't really shout and bawl in the dressing room but if there's something to say, I'll say it. That's just the way I am."

Former Blackburn trainee Douglas joined Swindon last season after being released by Leeds and has gone on to make 52 appearances for the Town.

It is unclear at the moment who will be his vice-captain.

"I've not decided on that," added Wilson. "We'll decide that further down the line."
