Swindon Town want to give Charlie Austin a new contract

Swindon Town

Swindon Town chief executive Nick Watkins wants to agree a new long-term deal for striker Charlie Austin.

The 20-year-old has scored seven goals in seven games since signing from non-league Poole Town in October.

Austin's current contract runs until the end of the season with an option to extend it but Watkins wants to sort it out sooner rather than later.

"Discussions will be getting under way with a view to a long-term future here," he told BBC Wiltshire.

Watkins continued: "Charlie's come in and performed very well and he's got that confidence that you need to fulfil that position as a striker.

"He's got that innate ability to be in the right place at the right time to put the ball away."

And Watkins added it would be a busy few days for him and manager Danny Wilson as they decide who is coming in and going out of the County Ground this month.

On-loan striker Alex Revell has already been sent back to Southend United after scoring two goals in 12 appearances during his four-month spell.

But the deals of defender Alan Sheehan, on loan from Leeds, and striker Danny Ward, on loan from Bolton, end on Friday.

"I know there are conversations going on with the respective clubs now and Danny will be shuffling the pack, and by the end of the week we should have an idea of where we are going," said Watkins.

"He's got to decide who is staying and who is not, but there is some money there."
