Swindon develop new stadium plans

Swindon are hoping to give basic plans for their redevelopment of the County Ground to the council early next year.

The board are currently selecting consultants to manage the project, having seen three previous schemes fail under previous regimes at the club.

But chairman Andrew Fitton told BBC Wiltshire it will be a long process.

"Our intention is to go to the council towards the end of the first quarter of next year with a scheme that says this is what we'd like to do," Fitton said.

The Swindon chairman added that there will not be any outrageous ideas or demands in their plans, but a completion date for the project is still some time away.

"Even if we got it all approved in 2010, you might be able to cut the first bit of ground in 2011 and it could take a couple of years for it to be built so 2012/2013 is a stretching target even now.

"We're talking to people who've done the stadiums at Swansea, Cardiff, Plymouth and are involved in the new Bristol [City] stadium." Fitton added.

And it seems that Town are likely to play on at the County Ground while any potential building work is taking place.

"We could move out, knock everything down and re-build while we go and ground share somewhere." said Fitton.

"But where? Reading, Bristol, Cheltenham. I don't think that's really a good answer.

"It [the County Ground] happens to lend itself very well to doing a phased development which we could do over a period of two and a half to three years by taking the ground down in sections and re-building it." he added.
