Evans quits Swindon
Swindon director of football Roy Evans will make a decisio on his future soon
Roy Evans was unhappy with financial resources on offer
Swindon Town's director of football Roy Evans has resigned.

The former Liverpool manager had been told by new chairman Willie Carson there would be no money available for player transfers.

That prompted Evans to quit the County Ground just four months after being appointed.

  Evans factfile
Born 4 October 1948 in Bootle
1969: Makes first of 11 appearances for Liverpool
1974: Retires as a player and joins the Liverpool 'bootroom'
1994: After winning seven reserve league titles, Evans is appointed Liverpool manager
1995: Wins Coca Cola cup, his first and only trophy success
1998: Resigns as Liverpool joint-manager, leaving Gerard Houllier solely in charge
2001: Appointed director of football at Swindon

Evans said: "It's been a very difficult decision for me. I've had a fabulous time here, the fans, the players and all the staff at Swindon have made me very welcome.

"It's not the end of the world. Basically the Robins have a sound squad and an ability to do well in the Second Division.

"I wish them every success for the future. I will always remember my stay with fond memories and will keep an eye out for the results on Saturdays."

Evans took over at Swindon in the summer after a relatively long spell out of the game.

He resigned as Liverpool manager in November 1998 and returned to football management briefly in March 2000 to help out at Fulham.

The 53-year-old will always be remembered for his 33-year association with the Merseysiders, even though his playing career was very brief.

Carson confirmed: "His decision to leave is due to the club's instability.

"The financial position we have found since taking over on 7 December is far worse than expected.

"Therefore the board cannot promise with any degree of certainty that funds will be available immediately or in the near future for new players."

Assistant boss Malcolm Crosby will take charge for the clash against Notts County at Meadow Lane.
