Swansea City capture David Edgar loan signing

Swansea City have signed Burnley defender David Edgar on loan for the rest of the season, subject to Football League clearance.

Edgar joins for his second spell at the Liberty Stadium having been on loan last season where he played five times, scoring once.

The 23-year-old Canadian under-20 international made just six appearances for Burnley this season.

And new Clarets boss Eddie Howe has allowed him to go out on loan.

Edgar is a useful acquisition for the Swans who are without captain Garry Monk until March after he suffered ruptured knee medial ligaments in the 4-0 FA Cup win over Colchester United.

"It's a good signing for us, especially coming so close to the [transfer] deadline," said Monk.

"He knows most of the lads from last season and settled in well when he was here. He is a good guy.

"More importantly, he can play anywhere across the back four and knows the system we play."

Edgar came through the ranks at Newcastle United and was a regular in their youth and reserve sides before making his senior debut, aged 19, against Bolton in December 2006.

He marked his home debut a few days later scoring in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United.

Those were the first of 23 games he played prior to signing a four-year contract Burnley in the summer of 2009 for £300,000.

His appearances at Turf Moor during the Clarets' solo year in the Premier League were limited and after playing just six times he joined the Swans in late March.

And since his return from his first loan spell, Edgar has played just six more times for Burnley, the latest coming in the goalless draw with QPR on 15 January.

He will not be available to play in Tuesday's Championship clash away to Bristol City, but is expected to come in to the frame for the south Wales derby with Cardiff City at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday, 6 February.
