Darren Pratley talks over new Swansea contract on hold

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins says that contract talks with midfielder Darren Pratley have been put on hold.

"Darren does not want further talks about contracts or new deals and just wants to concentrate on his football," Jenkins said in a statement.

Jenkins also confirmed they have rejected a bid from Championship rivals Nottingham Forest for Pratley, whose contract expires next summer.

"The offer is nowhere near the £1.5m being reported," Jenkins added.

"The offer is also nowhere near the level we feel is right for a player of Darren's ability at this point.

"We have been in negotiations with Darren's agent and made an offer to match the hypothetical terms the agent somehow knows are on the table at Nottingham Forest."

Pratley, 25, was thought to be close to signing a new three-year contract with Swansea that would have ended speculation over his future.

The Swans have already seen another key midfielder leave this summer, when Leon Britton ended his seven-year stay in south Wales to join Sheffield United on a free transfer.

But the club vowed to keep hold of London-born Pratley who was Swansea's top scorer last season with seven goals and has made 158 league and cup appearances since arriving from Fulham for £100,000 in June 2006.

While Swansea would be loath to see another senior player depart the Liberty Stadium for free, Jenkins hinted that the benefits Pratley might bring on the field this season could outweigh the profit of an immediate transfer fee that sees him leave.

"From Swansea City's point of view, taking into account the value and type of offer on the table from Forest, plus what's on offer to us as a football club over the next six months to achieve a top-six finish, the club may feel it is in our best interests to keep Darren on board and allow him to see out his contract," Jenkins said.
