Scotland named player of month

Swansea City striker and top scorer this season Jason Scotland has been named as the Championship player of the month for February.

Scotland scored five goals in six games last month - including one in both FA Cup games against Fulham.

In the Swans' home game with Plymouth on Tuesday night Scotland will hope to score his 21st goal of the season.

That would be his 50th strike for the club since joining from St Johnstone before the start of last season.

The award comes just after Scotland was named the Trinidad and Tobago footballer of the year for 2008.

Only Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has scored more goals in the Championship this season with 23.

Swans manager Roberto Martinez believes there is still much more to come from the front man.

"Having watched Jason in training every day, I really believe he hasn't hit his peak yet,'' explained Martinez.

"There are 10 games left and I'm convinced Jason can take his game to an even higher level.

"For any striker to score 20 goals at Championship level is an outstanding achievement and shouldn't be underestimated.

"He thoroughly deserves the award and all the lads in the squad are really pleased for him.''

Scotland's fine goal-scoring form continued in February, netting three goals in four games to help the Swans remain unbeaten.

He began the month by scoring twice in the home win over Ipswich Town. He followed this by getting on the scoresheet in the Swans' home win over Doncaster.

Also short-listed for the February award were Dele Adebola of Bristol City, Paul Heffernan of Doncaster Rovers and Watford's Tamas Priskin.
