Swans star Bodde out for season

Swans midfielder Ferrie Bodde is stretchered off against Birmingham
Ferrie Bodde's displays have courted attention from Premier League clubs

Swansea City have been dealt a huge blow as midfield talisman Ferrie Bodde has been ruled out for the season.

Bodde was stretchered off in the 36th minute of Friday's defeat by Birmingham with his left leg put in a splint.

Scans have revealed the 26-year-old Dutch midfielder has suffered anterior cruciate knee ligament damage and torn cartilage in his left knee.

"The MRI scan confirmed our fears... Ferrie will be out for around six months," said physio Richie Evans.

Top-scorer Bodde and fellow midfield ace Leon Britton were injured in Friday's 3-2 loss to Championship high-fliers Birmingham City.

Britton has given boss Roberto Martinez a boost as he could make a shock early return for Swansea's South Wales derby against Cardiff next weekend.

Ferrie is a big player for us as he is important in the way we do certain things. The way we play, we rely on Ferrie's distribution

Britton suffered a reccurrence of a ligament injury in his back but Swans physio Evans revealed scans did not show a "significant problem."

But Bodde's scan compounded Swansea's worst fears and he will now have reconstructive surgery on his left knee in his native Holland once the swelling has subsided.

Evans said: "Although he will see another consultant next week, Ferrie will be out for around six months.

"It will rule him out for the rest of the season and everyone, including Ferrie, is devastated."

Bodde's injury occurred after an innocuous looking challenge with Sebastian Larsson.

Bodde is Swansea's ball-playing centre midfielder and his heroics for the Championship new boys have attracted interested from Premier League clubs with a view to a January transfer window swoop.

The 5m-rated star is Swansea's seven-goal top-scorer this season and his 45-yard stunner at Preston North End is a definite goal of the season contender.

But this is crushing news for Bodde and Swansea as manager Martinez acknowledges: "Football is a cruel, cruel game."

"It is not good news especially the form he's in.

"Ferrie is a big player for us as he is important in the way we do certain things. The way we play, we rely on Ferrie's distribution.

"He felt it straight away. Ferrie went into a challenge and he felt the knee open up and he put the whole body into that knee.

"Ferrie must be proud what he has helped Swansea achieve so far this season and now the club must give him all the support we can for his recovery.

The Swans have already lost defender Marcos Painter for the season with a similar cruciate knee ligament problem while Wales midfielder Owain Tudur Jones is still returning to full fitness.

And Swansea will also be without Spanish midfielder Jordi Gomez for the South Wales derby with Cardiff City at the Liberty Stadium next Sunday after picking up his fifth booking of the season against Birmingham.

Kevin Phillips' late double strike inspired Birmingham, the Championship's second-place team, to a stunning comeback to end Swansea's unbeaten league record at the Liberty Stadium this season.

Martinez added: "I'm convinced 100% if we don't lose the two players, we don't lose the game."

Gomez and a Liam Ridgewell own goal scored for Swansea either side of Marcus Bent's leveller and Gorka Pintado also hit the post for the hosts.

"We played as good as we have this season," said Martinez.

"But you need to take your chances and our share of play deserved more goals - and we didn't take them."

"And you know with players like Kevin Phillips and James McFadden around, Birmingham can score goals.

"But we are a club who got promoted from League One last season and are trying to consolidate in the Championship so we must be proud of the football that we play.

"But my concern is how expensive this performance is going to be long term."
