Swansea City's Spanish defender Angel Rangel has signed a new "long term" contract at the Championship club.

The highly-rated 25-year-old's current deal runs out at the end of the season and it is understood his new deal runs until at least 2010.

"With all the fuss around the country surrounding transfer-deadline day, this is as good as any new signing, probably better," said manager Roberto Martinez.

"We've all seen he is more than capable of playing at the highest level."

Martinez added: "I'm sure the fans will be delighted to see someone like Angel who wants to commit his long-term future with Swansea City and fulfil his ambition of playing in the Premier League with us."

Rangel arrived at the Liberty Stadium at the start of last season from Spanish side Terrassa for a small undisclosed fee.

He played a key role in the Swans' title-winning promotion from League One last season.

His efforts were recognised by being named in the Professional Footballers' Association team of the season.

"I had a great first season at Swansea,'' said Rangel.

"Now if I can help in the short or long-term to get the club into the Premier League I'll be more than happy.

"We are doing well in the Championship at the moment and I'm sure it will continue.''
