Scotland signs new Swansea deal

Swansea City striker Jason Scotland has signed a new long-term contract with the Championship new boys.

The 29-year-old was the top scorer in League One last season with 29 goals as the Swans romped to promotion.

"I never expected to do as well as I did last season because it was my first taste of playing in the Football League," said Scotland.

"I'm pleased we've confirmed the deal early because it means I can continue to concentrate on my football."

Trinidad & Tobago international Scotland joined the Swans from Scottish side St Johnstone for 25,000 last summer but has now signed a new deal, believed to be until 2011.

But despite his goal-scoring rate, he struggled since Christmas with a stomach problem and had surgery in June in a bid to ease the problem.

Now he is aiming for another prolific season.

"It's going to be difficult to match it because the Championship is a higher level, but I'm looking forward to the challenge," he said.

"If I can get close, I'll be happy.''

Scotland started his career in Trinidad & Tobago with San Juan Jabloteh and Defence Force.

He signed for Dundee United in August 2003 only to be forced home after his work permit application renewal was turned down in 2005.

But he then joined St Johnstone and scored 33 goals in 66 League appearances over two seasons before moving to south Wales.

And manager Roberto Martinez made his move early to secure the talented striker for a longer period.

"We are delighted to have secured someone of Jason's quality on a long-term deal,'' said Martinez.

"He proved last season what a deadly finisher he is in front of goal.

"Jason is a rare breed in the modern game. He is someone who relies on his raw talent and a magic touch to score goals."

  • Jason Scotland will be presented with the Golden Boot award before Saturday's game against Nottingham Forest after finishing League One's top scorer last season.
