Martinez excited by Charlton test

Roberto Martinez
Martinez led Swansea to the League One title

Swansea boss Roberto Martinez admits he is excited about Saturday's trip to Charlton for the Championship season opener.

The Spaniard led the Swans into the second tier of English football last season by winning the League One title.

And now 24 years after the last time they played at this level, Martinez said: "We can't wait.

"The excitement is taking over everyone and in a way we can't wait to get Saturday underway."

Martinez admits that the Swans face a difficult campaign and says it is important that they settle quickly in the Championship.

"When you are promoted to a new level, the quicker you adapt to it, the better, then the results will follow.

"Charlton will be a huge test and it's clear that if you switch off you are going to get heavily punished.

"The Valley is a very tough place to go, but in a way it's perfect because we are going to be pushed to our maximum."

Martinez only has a few injury worries ahead of the game.

Defender Angel Rangel and striker Gorka Pintado are both out, while last season's top scorer Jason Scotland could make the bench.

The 29-goal hit-man is recovering after stomach operation but played 62 minutes in Tuesday's friendly win over ADO Den Haag.

"I'm sure he will be available on Saturday," said Martinez.

"We are trying to get as many players available for selection."
