Evans targets struggling Swans
Chris Evans
Evans has been linked with QPR
Radio presenter and media tycoon Chris Evans could be poised to buy Second Division outfit Swansea City.

It is a long-held dream of the high-profile media tycoon to own a football club.

Club chairman Neil McClure confirmed that an agent for Evans had contacted the club's Vetch Field headquarters on behalf of the multi-millionaire DJ on Wednesday.

"I have received a telephone call from Danny Murphy, who is a representative of Chris Evans, saying Chris was interested in Swansea City," said McClure.

"He said, however, that he was currently looking at a First Division club and if that deal fell through he would be taking a closer look at Swansea City."

Evans, 35, is known to have been keen on buying First Division strugglers QPR - but Swansea would represent a far cheaper option.

The former presenter of TFI Friday is known to have the funds needed for a football club buy-out.

He was rated in a recent survey as the highest-paid entertainer in Britain in the UK.

He earned £35m last year from the sale of his Ginger Media Group.

Evans graduated from radio presenter to one of the most influential figures in the media, via the rise of the Ginger operation and his purchase of Richard Branson's Virgin Radio.

Drop zone

Swansea were put of for sale by their owners, Ninth Floor, last month following a slump in form that has seen them languishing in the Second Division relegation zone.

South Wales club had started the season with great optimism.

They clinched promotion to Division Two last year - at exactly the moment that their arch-rivals, Cardiff City, were relagated to the Third Division.

Cardiff City were themselves the subject of a high-profile takeover last year, when former Wimbledon owner, millionaire businessman Sam Hammam, moved in.

Hammam, the architect of Wimbledon's 'Crazy Gang' success in the 1980s and '90s, has since transformed Cardiff's prospects by buying in new talent.

Swansea fans will be hoping that Evans can fashion a similar turn-around in their fortunes.
