Danny Welbeck Sunderland deal unlikely - Steve Bruce

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce thinks it is unlikely he will be able to sign on-loan striker Danny Welbeck from Manchester United on a permanent basis.

Welbeck has been in excellent form during his spell at the Stadium of Light, scoring six goals in 25 appearances in all competitions.

The 20-year-old made his England debut against Ghana on Tuesday.

Bruce said that his prospects of agreeing a permanent deal for Welbeck are "very, very doubtful".

"The boys who come here from Manchester United always do well. There must be something in the air here that they enjoy," Bruce commented.

"Danny has had a wonderful time here and has enjoyed playing. Now he has got the ultimate accolade for his performances for us and he has been called up for the England team.

"It is going to be very, very difficult to try to get him here [on a permanent deal].

Welbeck has been an important fixture in the Sunderland attack this season, striking up a good partnership with Asamoah Gyan following the departure of Darren Bent to Aston Villa.

However, with Sir Alex Ferguson thought to be keen for Welbeck to challenge for a place at Old Trafford, Bruce feels the odds are against the player returning to Wearside for another season.

"Can we get him? I think it's very, very doubtful, if I am being honest," Bruce said.

Bruce welcomes Fraizer Campbell and Michael Turner back into his squad for the trip to Manchester City on Sunday. Both players have been long-term absentees through injury but are hopeful of playing some part in the match at Eastlands.

The Black Cats boss also confirmed he has fined Argentinian defender Marcos Angeleri, who made comments to a South American radio station claiming that he is not being selected to play by Bruce because he is not English.

Bruce said: "I have dealt with it like I always deal with it, in my office. He pleads innocence to it; whether he is innocent or not, I'm not really interested. It's been said and the damage has been done, as far as I am concerned.

"He has been dealt with and fined and as far as I am concerned, that's the end of it."
