Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson has admitted the threat of being rested has made him work harder to justify his place to manager Steve Bruce.

The 20-year-old scored and picked up the man of the match award against West Ham United on Sunday, his 18th game of the season for club and country.

"It made me a bit disappointed, so I made sure in training that I wanted to play," Henderson told BBC Newcastle.

"This week in training I knuckled down, and I just want to kick on from here."

Henderson added: "I wanted to go out there and make things right."

Henderson's 50th appearance for the Wearsiders in Sunday's victory was capped off by his first goal of the season from Asamoah Gyan's cutback.

"It was great play by Asamoah, he spotted us and I managed to take this one," Henderson added.

"I've scored on this season and hopefully there's a lot more to come, it doesn't matter how they come.

"I just want to take part in the game and for the team, and the three points was massive for us."

Academy graduate Henderson made his debut for the Black Cats in a 5-0 loss by Chelsea in November 2008, and was capped for the England senior side in November's 2-0 defeat by France.
