Sunderland defender Kay rejects Gateshead return

Sunderland defender Michael Kay has opted to return to his parent club after a two-month loan spell at Blue Square Bet Premier side Gateshead.

The 20-year-old scored once in 10 appearances for the Tynesiders, and the club were keen to extend the loan period prior to Kay's decision.

"It is disappointing because Kay has featured in all 10 games since we brought him in," boss Ian Bogie said.

"It would have been good to keep him at the club a bit longer."

Bogie added: "The Blue Square Bet Premier is a very competitive league but he has decided he wants to go back to Sunderland and play reserve-team football.

"I would like to thank Sunderland for allowing the player to come to Gateshead and I am sure the experience will have been a beneficial one."

Kay made an impressive start to his Gateshead loan spell, scoring on his debut against Mansfield. The defender made one appearance for Sunderland in a 2-1 FA Cup defeat by Blackburn in February 2009.
