Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon was relieved to complete Tuesday's 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur unscathed on his return to the first team.

Gordon, 27, made his first start of the season at White Hart Lane after injury and the form of fellow keeper Simon Mignolet had kept him out of the side.

"It's my first competitive game in six months," Gordon told BBC Newcastle.

"It's been a long time out, I'm pleased to get back in, it didn't bother me, I had an early save and it settled me."

Gordon added: "It was important for me to get a good, confident early touch of the ball and settle myself down for the game."

The Scotland international's return came almost a year to the day that he suffered a broken arm at White Hart Lane in a 2-0 defeat.

He returned from that setback in January but suffered a recurrence of the injury in the summer which meant he missed the start of the season.

And Gordon admitted the venue of his comeback had crossed his mind in the build up to the game.

"There's always nerves every game. I knew it was a year almost exactly to the day that this began, but I used it more as a motivational thing than to be nervous," he continued.

"To come back here and put a good performance in was all I was focusing on.

"The last time I thought about it [the injury] was when we changed ends and I thought that was great because we got that end out of the way early on.

"[I was pleased to] Get straight back in and visit the spot where it happened, but I didn't think about it once the game was underway."
