Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson has signed a new three-year contract which will keep him on Wearside until the summer of 2013.

The 25-year-old has scored eight goals in 85 games for the Black Cats.

Former Sunderland manager Roy Keane signed Richardson for £5.5m in 2007 from Manchester United, where he made 81 appearances in five years.

Richardson showed his versatility by briefly playing at left-back under Sunderland's current boss Steve Bruce.

Richardson, who began his career at West Ham, spent the latter half of the 2005 season on loan at West Brom, helping them avoid relegation from the Premier League.
