Anton Ferdinand hamstring injury rocks Sunderland

Sunderland are awaiting news on the hamstring injury picked up by defender Anton Ferdinand during Saturday's 2-1 friendly win at Leicester City.

Boss Steve Bruce potentially has four defenders out of action, with George McCartney, Michael Turner and Titus Bramble also sidelined.

Ferdinand is likely to undergo an assessment of his injury this week.

Since joining the Black Cats from West Ham in August 2008, Ferdinand has made 61 appearances in all competitions.

Meanwhile winger Andy Reid is "progressing well" with rehabiliation on an achilles injury, according to club medical chief Dr Glen Rae.

Reid, who last featured in the friendly against Munster last month, has struggled with injury since his move to Wearside in January 2008, and missed much of last term with a calf problem.

His last competitive appearance came in February's 1-1 Premier League draw at Portsmouth.

Sunderland travel to German Bundesliga side 1899 Hoffenheim on Sunday, 8 August for their final warm-up game ahead of their Premier League opener against Birmingham City on Saturday 14 August.
