Sunderland captain Lorik Cana signs for Galatasaray
Cana was made captain by Steve Bruce following his summer move
Sunderland captain Lorik Cana has signed for Turkish side Galatasaray SK on a four-year deal for a fee in excess of £5m.
Cana, 26, who joined the Black Cats from French Ligue 1 side Marseille in July 2009, made 31 Premier League appearances last season.
"I have been offered the opportunity to play in European competition and the Champions League," Cana said.
"This was not an easy decision for me though and I hope people understand."
Cana added: "I thank everyone at Sunderland - the coaching staff, medical team, office staff, my teammates and of course the fans.
"I wish the club to achieve everything it deserves and to continue moving higher and higher."
We thank Lorik for his time here and wish him the best of luck for the future.
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce
Manager Steve Bruce, who signed the Albania international, revealed the player was a popular figure at the Stadium of Light but was happy to sanction his departure for personal reasons.
"Lorik's style of play and attitude made him a natural choice as captain last season but when he came back for pre-season training it was apparent that he had a desire to return to Europe," Bruce said.
"Turkey is nearer to Albania, where his family and roots are, and it is much easier for him to see them on a more regular basis - I think this was a major factor for him.
"We thank Lorik for his time here and wish him the best of luck for the future."
