Sunderland have confirmed the signing of ENPPI defender Ahmed Elmohamady on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old Egypt international has 42 caps and boss Steve Bruce also has the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

"His pace and direct style will be an asset to us and give the team an extra dimension," Bruce said.

"He is already an experienced international, which will serve him well as he adjusts to life."

Bruce added: "I expect it will take him time to settle but Ahmed is a player who can have a big impact in this division and we welcome him to the club."

Elmohamady, who began his career with hometown club Ghazl El-Mehalla, made his first team debut at the age of 17 before moving to Cairo-based ENPPI in 2006.

He becomes Sunderland's third signing of the summer, after goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and midfielder Cristian Riveros.
