Sunderland is my priority - Jordan Henderson

Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson has revealed his international ambitions remain secondary to his performances at club level.

The 19-year-old has been linked with England honours following his efforts in the Sunderland first team but remains grounded in his expectations.

"As a kid you dream of playing for England," Henderson told BBC Newcastle.

"But I've just been concentrating on playing for Sunderland, doing my best and whatever comes along is a bonus."

Henderson progressed through the club's academy to make his debut against Chelsea in November 2008 after showing promise during a loan-spell with Coventry last season.

He has gone on to make 32 first-team appearances this term, be handed with a new five-year deal from boss Steve Bruce and scoop the club's Young Player of the Year award.

Henderson believes Sunderland's ambitions match those of his own.

"The club's looking forward, the gaffer and the staff have been brilliant this season and we've pushed on, hopefully we can finish 10th and possibly higher if we keep playing well,"

"As a kid I supported them, so I was over the moon about signing my new contract."

Sunderland have two games of the Premier League season remaining, with the visit of Manchester United on Sunday, 2 May and then a visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers seven days later.
