Sunderland striker Darren Bent may be fit to face Wigan

Sunderland striker Darren Bent looks set to be fit to line up against Wigan on Saturday after fears were allayed over his hamstring problem.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce initially suggested that he could be without his top scorer for up to three weeks.

However scans have revealed no lasting damage and the England forward, 25, could feature at the DW stadium.

"Obviously it was a case of cramp rather than a hamstring strain, that's what we believe," said Bruce.

"Darren did a lot of work in the gym on Wednesday and he has been out on the training ground today and if he comes through it and there are no repercussions, then he has got a chance for Saturday.

"All the scans have come back and they are all positive, so he has got an outstanding chance to be involved on Saturday."

Bent, who has scored nine times for Sunderland this season, appeared to clutch his hamstring after scoring the winner in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Arsenal.
