Sunderland seal Turner transfer

Sunderland have signed Hull City defender Michael Turner for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old centre-back has signed a four-year deal with the Black Cats.

Hull boss Phil Brown said offers for Turner, who was chased by several clubs, had been "getting towards a ridiculous valuation".

Earlier this month it was reported Liverpool had a £6m bid for Turner turned down, with Hull demanding £12m for the highly rated defender.

As well as Liverpool, Turner was linked with Fulham but he has now become Bruce's seventh signing of the summer.

"A big factor in attracting me was manager Steve Bruce," Turner told Sunderland's website. "He has a real pedigree."

"Michael is one of the country's premier central defenders and I have had my eye on him for a while," added Bruce.

"I've been looking to add size and strength to the back line and Michael fits the bill perfectly in that respect, as well as being an excellent technical footballer.

"He has developed immeasurably as a player while with Hull. I am extremely confident he will continue that progress with Sunderland and go on to be a big success."

Turner began his career at Charlton before moving to Brentford and then to Hull for £350,000 in 2006, playing 146 games and scoring 13 goals.

Last season the centre-back was one of only two players to play every minute of all 38 Premier League games - the other being Sylvain Distin for Portsmouth.

Bruce has worked hard to recruit defensive targets this summer, landing Paraguay international Paulo da Silva and loan signing John Mensah to date.

Turner's arrival follows the signings of Darren Bent, Lee Cattermole, Fraizer Campbell and Lorik Cana, as well as Da Silva and loanee Mensah.

On Sunday, the Tigers snapped up Sunderland defender Paul McShane.
