"I've been part of a Sunderland team relegated a couple of seasons back and it's not a nice feeling. It's not something you want on your CV really," he said.
"We don't want to get dragged back into the bottom three and we've got four more games to ensure we don't, we need three or four points to get ourselves away from the teams below us.
"We're in the pole position to get ourselves out of it, if we don't get any points out of these four games then perhaps we do deserve to go down, we've got to work as a team out there and come away with some points."
The Wales international joined Sunderland in October 2004 from Chester City for £140,000 and has made more than 150 appearances.
