El Hadji Diouf is looking forward to making his Sunderland debut against his old club Liverpool on Saturday, regardless of where he lines up.

The versatile Senegalese international has been used in a variety of attacking roles in pre-season games but admitted he is happy just to be in the squad.

"I'm not bothered if I play left, right in the middle, I love playing football," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"I'm happy to come to training and play with my mates."

Diouf, who joined the Wearsiders from Bolton for around 2.5m in July, ironically comes face to face with one of his former clubs in his first competitive fixture. And the 27-year-old believes they can beat Liverpool in Saturday's season opener.

"Liverpool have a good team and want to win something this year," he said. "But we're at home, it's the first game and we need a positive result.

"I'm very happy to have joined this club. I know they have a lot of ambition for the future."
