Sunderland have completed the signing of Charlton midfielder Andy Reid on a three-and-a-half year deal which will cost the Black Cats up to £4m.

Reid links up with a former Ireland teammate in manager Roy Keane who was determined to sign the winger.

Keane told BBC Radio Newcastle: "He won't be fit for another week but we were prepared to wait and go ahead.

"I'm delighted because Andy will give us something different to the midfielders we've got."

The 25-year-old started at Nottingham Forest before joining Tottenham on transfer deadline day in January 2005.

He then moved to South London for £3m in August 2006.

The move was the second bit of business of the day between the two clubs after defender Greg Halford moved to Charlton on loan.

"It was a difficult decision, but we have to look at ourselves and say 'are we going to let this affect us or will this make us stronger'?", said Charlton manager Alan Pardew.

"Hopefully, the latter will happen."
