McCarthy on Lions alert
Mick McCarthy
Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy says his side will be underdogs to reach the FA Cup final if Millwall see off Tranmere in their quarter-final replay.

The Black Cats have already beaten Birmingham and Sheffield United in this year's competition.

But McCarthy says the Lions will have the edge should the two First Division sides meet in the semi-finals.

"If Millwall were to win I guess we're underdogs - they've beaten us twice this season," he insisted.

Millwall and Tranmere will replay at Prenton Park on 16 March after Sunday's goalless draw at the New Den.

McCarthy added: "We wanted to play one of the Nationwide League clubs and I'm sure Millwall and Tranmere wanted to play us.

"It puts a hell of a lot of pressure on that quarter-final replay now, doesn't it?"

If Sunderland win their semi-final they will almost certainly play in Europe next season.

Arsenal and Manchester United, who meet in the other semi-final, are virtually assured of a place in the Champions League next season.

"If we do get that European place that will be fantastic," said McCarthy.

Sunderland vice-chairman John Fickling said the lure of Europe was a massive incentive given the club's recent problems following relegation from the Premiership.

"We've been through some very difficult and tough times but now there is tremendous excitement among the fans and everyone associated with the club," he said.

"It's nice to see a few smiles on people's faces because we haven't had that for a long time."
