Williams issues apology
Sunderland defender Darren Williams
Williams could face action
Sunderland defender Darren Williams has apologised after kicking a ball into the crowd and injuring a spectator in the goalless draw at West Brom.

Williams could face action after referee Clive Penton included the incident in his match report.

A teenage female fan needed hospital treatment after Williams lashed the ball into the stand.

Williams said: "I apologise unreservedly. It was an accident, there were two balls on the pitch."

The incident left the girl with a bloody nose and sparked an angry reaction from Albion fans.

Police were forced to help stewards contain possible trouble.

A spokesman for Albion confirmed: "The referee had a discussion with our stadium safety officer to discover exactly what went on.

"The girl recieved medical attention at a Sandwell hospital. It's our understanding she needed no furhter treatment.

"But we believe the referee will include the incident in his match report."
