Sorensen saddened by Reid exit
Thomas Sorensen
Sunderland have let in 13 league goals this season
Sunderland goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen insists he is as disappointed as the rest of his team-mates by the sacking of Peter Reid.

The Denmark international was quoted in the Danish press on Tuesday describing Reid's dismissal as the "right decision."

However, Sorensen said he owed much of his success to the departing manager.

"I have really enjoyed working with Peter. He gave me the chance to come over to Sunderland as a new keeper and he has had a significant impact on my career," he said on Wednesday.

"I was shocked to hear of the news and like the rest of the lads was saddened.

"Peter has been a great influence on my career and I would like to thank him and wish him good luck in whatever he does."

Record goalscorer Kevin Phillips also paid tribute to Reid, who paid Watford £235,000 for the striker in 1997.

"Since coming to Sunderland I've had success in the First Division and the Premiership and I've also broken into the international scene," he said.

"I owe it to Peter and I'm disappointed he's gone but we all know him and I'm sure he'll be back."

But Phillips said the players would now be focusing on improving their form, which has seen them win just two of nine Premiership games.

"You can say we mourned a little bit yesterday but today we've got get on and look forward to the West Ham game," he said.

"But we'll all rally round together, have a good training session again today and keep doing so until someone is in place.

"We've got to be upbeat now and forget about it, it's happened."

Phillips has been out of action since the beginning of September after undergoing a hernia operation but said he was close to making his comeback.

"I trained fully today and Iżm quite excited about it," he said.

"It's been frustrating in the last four weeks and even more so with all this happening. I want to go out, have a good week's training and hopefully be fit for selection for the West Ham game."
