New injury blow for Phillips
Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips
Phillips is only just back from groin surgery
Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips may be rested for the rest of the club's stay in Belgium after suffering a groin injury in Wednesday's friendly with Royal Antwerp.

The 29-year-old, who has only just come back from surgery on a groin injury, limped off 29 minutes into the 1-1 draw at the De Bosuil Stadium.

Phillips suffered another groin injury, but manager Peter Reid is confident that it has nothing to do with the problem which was operated on at the end of last season.

However, it is likely that he will be rested for Saturday's friendly against KAA Gent, which will bring an end to the club's Belgian tour.

"It's not related to the other injuries, although it's on the same part of his body," Reid told the club's official website.

"He felt it when he jumped for the ball and we decided to err on the side of caution and take him off.

"It's nothing serious, although we'll probably not risk him on Saturday."

Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Thomas Butler has signed a three year contract at the Stadium of Light.

The 21-year-old midfielder, whose previous deal expired at the end of June, has committed himself to the Black Cats until the summer of 2005.

Butler said: "I'm glad to get everything sorted out and I'm looking forward to the start of the season.

"I got a taste of Premiership football at the end of last season and I'm hoping to impress the manager and try to get into the side."
