Sunderland legend Shackleton dies
![]() Len Shackleton was one of Sunderland's greats
Sunderland legend Len Shackleton has died at the age of 78.
Shackleton was taken ill on Monday night and died in hospital near his home in Grange-over-Sands around noon on Tuesday. The former England international never fully recovered after suffering a heart attack in August. There will be a minute's silence in memory of Shackleton before Tuesday's Worthington Cup tie with Manchester United at the Stadium of Light. Shackleton scored 101 times in 348 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland and is still the post-war record goalscorer at the club, more than 40 years after retiring through injury. Six-goal haul Len played in the inside-forward position during his initial years at Roker Park, then as a outside right. He also played for Newcastle and Bradford Park Avenue and scored six times on his Newcastle debut in the Magpies' record victory, a 13-0 win over Newport County in a 1946 Second Division game. Shackleton is survived by his wife, Marjorie.
