Stoke defender Danny Higginbotham has signed a one-year extension to his contract at the Britannia Stadium.

The new deal means the 31-year-old, who re-signed from Sunderland in 2008, will stay with the club until 2013.

"We wanted to cement his future as he's a good professional," said manager Tony Pulis. "It's important we look after Danny, I've got a lot of time for him.

"There are certain players at the club that started all this off and Danny falls into that category."

Higginbotham, who has made only five appearances this season, first moved to the Britannia Stadium from Southampton for an initial fee of £225,000 in August 2006.

He signed for Sunderland a year later, but re-joined Stoke in 2008 after they won promotion to the Premier League.

Pulis added: "Danny may not be in the side on a regular basis at the moment, but he still has a crucial role to play, as do a number of other players in a similar situation.

"The fabric of a football club is made up of the whole cloth, not bits and pieces, so we are delighted Danny will remain part of that."

Higginbotham made his 200th top-flight appearance in the 2-1 defeat at home to Manchester United on Sunday.
