Hammers need goals - Etherington

Stoke City winger Matthew Etherington believes a lack of goals is to blame for his former club West Ham being in the Premier League's relegation zone.

The Hammers are 19th, having scored just eight goals in seven games, and go to the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.

Etherington told BBC Radio Stoke: "They've got a lot of good players but for some reason it's just not clicking.

"There doesn't seem to be much cutting edge there. You struggle to see where the goals are going to come from."

Gianfranco Zola's side have taken five points from their opening seven matches, with their only victory coming on the opening day of the season, a 2-0 success away at newly-promoted Wolves.

Etherington left Upton Park in January to join Stoke in a £1.8m deal, after 10 years in the capital with Tottenham and West Ham.

He made almost 200 appearances for the Hammers, and he admitted that the club is still a big part of his life.

"Everyone was surprised when I came to Stoke and saw it as a step down, but I didn't think that," added the 28-year-old.

"It's a club that I want to see do well. I had five great years there and I'll always follow them.

"They will always have a place in my heart because they were great to me and so were the fans, but even so it will be nice to get a win against them on Saturday."
