Stoke start delights Higginbotham

Stoke City defender Danny Higginbotham believes the club are heading in the right direction after picking up seven points from their first four matches.

The Potters have won two and lost one so far, with a 4-0 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield on 19 August the only blip.

"Liverpool was disappointing, but we've had a good return after that," Higginbotham told BBC Radio Stoke.

"We're scoring goals and keeping clean sheets. It's early in the season but we've got to maintain it."

Dave Kitson scored the only goal for Stoke as they defeated Higginbotham's old club Sunderland 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.

Stoke's next action is on 12 September against Chelsea, who have a 100% record from their first four matches.

Higginbotham admitted that he would preferred the game to take place before the international break.

"When you're on a little bit of a run, you want to be playing games," said the left-back. "It's been a busy schedule for the lads, we've got a bit of a break now and we'll make of it what we can.

"I'm sure when the next game comes around we'll be even fitter than we are now."
