Holland takes Stoke academy job

Holland was relieved of his duties at Crewe in November

Former Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Holland has been appointed as manager of Stoke City's academy, reports BBC Radio Stoke.

Holland, who left Crewe in November, has turned down a similar role at Chelsea in favour of a move to the Britannia Stadium.

He replaces George Foster, who left the Potters to take up a role at Glenn Hoddle's soccer school.

Before managing the Alex, Holland was in charge of the Crewe academy.

In his 16-year spell in charge of the youth system at Crewe, Holland oversaw the development of players such as Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy and West Ham striker Dean Ashton.

He succeeded Dario Gradi as first-team coach of the South Cheshire side in the summer of 2007, with the Alex avoiding relegation to League Two on the final day of the following season.

However, after a poor start to this season, which saw the Railwaymen slump to the bottom of League One, Holland was relieved of his duties and replaced by former Stoke boss Gudjon Thordarson.

The 38-year-old arrives at Stoke with the club preparing to undertake a 5m overhaul of their training facilities and has been placed in sole charge of the academy.

Prior to Holland's appointment, Walsall head of youth Mick Halsall had been in line for the post, but turned a move to the Potteries in favour of staying at the Banks's Stadium.
