Delap backs Wright-Phillips' case

Stoke midfielder Rory Delap is hoping that Shaun Wright-Phillips escapes a ban after being charged with violent conduct by the Football Association.

Wright-Phillips kicked out at Delap in Stoke's 1-0 win over Manchester City at the Britannia Stadium after the former Derby man kicked the ball at him.

Delap told BBC Radio Stoke: "It would probably be harsh for him to get banned from any games.

"After what I did, his reaction towards me was to be expected really."

Delap was sent off for his part in the incident and said he understands why he was shown a red card.

"I didn't see any red mist or anything like that. I went to play the ball again and I shouldn't have done," said Delap.

"I thought a red card was a bit harsh but it's one of those things. Seeing it on television, it does look a lot worse than when I was doing it."

Match referee Martin Atkinson has already told the FA that, after reviewing video evidence, he would have shown the England international a red card if he had seen the incident at the time.

Wright-Phillips was cleared to play in City's 1-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday ahead of his hearing on Monday.

If found guilty of the charge, he will miss Premier League games at Portsmouth, Liverpool and West Ham.
