Icelandic international Petur Marteinsson has left Stoke and is set to move to Sweden.
Marteinsson joined Stoke in 2001
The defender would have been out of contract at the end of the season and has left by mutual consent.
"It is a mutual decision," said Stoke director of football John Rudge on the club's website.
"Petur expressed a desire to return to Scandinavia with his family and he has a chance to start a fresh career in Sweden.
"We considered the situation carefully and decided it would be in the best interests of both club and player."
Marteinsson joined in 2001 from Norwegian club Stabaek but his time at Stoke was undermined by injury problems.
