Stockport County will survive after drop - Mary Gibbons

Stockport County acting chairman Mary Gibbons has said the club will survive despite their impending relegation.

The Hatters have suffered from financial problems, spending the whole of last season in administration.

In the summer a group of local business people, the 2015 Consortium, took control and steadied the club.

Gibbons told BBC Radio Manchester: "Even though we have dropped out we are still alive, which this time last year we didn't think we would be."

The club still have a mathematical chance of staying in the league but will need to win their final two games and make up a goal difference of 35.

"The board and the backroom staff are actually working very hard preparing for next season and we will be sitting down as a board and basically looking at the structure of the football club," she added.

"We've actually got three contracted players for next season so obviously it is our job to have a look at the players that we've got and have a chat with the managerial team."

Gibbons also said she will sit down with the Stockport County board and discuss the position of manager, after caretaker boss Ray Mathias expressed an interest in keeping the job next year.

"Ray has done a very, very good job since he's taken over the reigns. But a lot of the work, as Ray would actually tell you, had already been put in place," she said.

"When they came to the football club he was actually standing in working alongside Peter (Ward) and Alan (Lord) and they'd actually implemented a lot of things that have come to the front now.

"Ray has got a contract until the end of the season and obviously the managerial position is being looked at at the moment.

"Ray has done a great job at Stockport County and he has made comments and shown an interest in wanting to stay on, so what we need to do now as a board is discuss that position and appoint accordingly."
