Peter Ward wants Stockport County future resolved

Stockport County caretaker manager Peter Ward says he wants his own and the club's long-term future sorted out.

Ward, who took charge following Paul Simpson's sacking in January, led the Football League's bottom club to a 2-1 win over Oxford on Saturday.

The 46-year-old told BBC Radio Manchester: "I'm acting manager at the moment and I give it 100% all the time.

"It's dragging on for me, it's dragging on for everyone else. We definitely need some leadership at the club."

He continued: "I'm doing it day by day until someone tells me I'm not doing it. I don't think it's a great environment to be working in for the players, myself and the fans; we need some strong leadership at the club to take it forward."

Despite Saturday's injury-time win, Stockport remain at the bottom of League Two with the worst goal difference in the Football League.

With clubs around them having games in hand County face an uphill struggle to stay in the league, but Ward insists no matter what level they are playing football at, the planning for next season must start now.

"We need to get something sorted out as the manager needs to come in and be planning and the plans should be in place for next year," he said.

"The targets we're after should be contacted and speaking to agents and plan things on the football pitch.

"We've got 17 players out of contract, we need to secure the training ground for next season. There is a lot of planning to be done.

"The club can't just drift along like it's drifting along. Somebody has to take the bull by the horns and get things sorted out."
