Ashton joins Stevenage from Grays

Stevenage Borough

Stevenage Borough have signed sought-after defender Jon Ashton from Grays Athletic until 2010.

The 26-year-old had been linked with a move to Gillingham after he failed to agree a new deal with the Essex club.

Ashton has previously played for Leicester City, Oxford United and Rushden & Diamonds.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace told the club's website: "He's very highly rated and when we enquired last season Grays were asking a king's ransom."

He added: "[Manager] Graham Westley has been very keen on bringing Jon to Stevenage after managing him at Rushden, but until now we've not been able to afford him.

"He's been backwards and forwards with Grays and Jon's agent for months as we've tried to secure him within our wage budget.

"Luke [Oliver] moving to Wycombe has made that possible and he's lost no time in making the move," Wallace said.
