Buddies to bag Brighton's Thomson

Brighton midfielder Steven Thomson has agreed to join St Mirren once the January transfer window opens.

The 30-year-old will sign a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Scottish League club, returning to Scotland after a year on the south coast.

Buddies manager Gus MacPherson said he needed more options in midfield.

"He will bring a wee bit more competitiveness into the midfield area as well as bringing a fresh face into the squad," he told the club website.

Glasgow-born Thomson, who has also played for Crystal Palace and Peterborough, spent two-and-a-half years at Falkirk before joining Brighton in January.

Strenghening other areas depend on how the games go and if we pick up any injuries

And he will arrive in Paisley having been given a vote of confidence by St Mirren full-back Jack Ross.

"Jack Ross, who played beside Steven at Falkirk, speaks very highly of him and how many of us can forget the great goal he scored against us when we lost 5-1 to Falkirk last season?" said MacPherson.

A midfielder had been MacPherson's priority as he prepared for January's possible transfer moves.

"Other areas depend on how the games go and if we pick up any injuries," he added.

Thomson made 21 appearances this season for Brighton, who sit just above the relegation zone in England's League One.
