St Johnstone boss Derek McInnes coy on West Brom talk

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes has refused to put himself in contention for the West Brom job, following the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo.

Di Matteo left the Premier League side on Sunday and McInnes has emerged as a potential candidate for the job.

"I can understand it because I played for them, but I'm not agitated to jump at the first sign of a bit of interest," said McInnes.

"I'm happy where I am at St Johnstone at the minute."

The Baggies lost 3-0 at Manchester City on Saturday and the club said a run of 13 defeats in 18 games was the reason for the decision to relieve Di Matteo of his duties.

I've been linked with it in the past, but I'm more than happy with what I'm doing at St Johnstone

McInnes has enjoyed relative success at McDiarmid Park, and his side are still in the Scottish Cup this season, while the Perth side currently sit in seventh place in the Scottish Premier League.

However, speaking to BBC Scotland's Sportsound programme McInnes insisted he was not looking to take on the top job at the Hawthorns.

"I'm a bit sceptical of these things," said McInnes. "I've been linked with it in the past, but I'm more than happy with what I'm doing at St Johnstone.

"There's a lot of progression within the team and areas where we can go and achieve things.

"I want to do as well as we can in the cup and get to the top six.

"That's all we're concentrating on, but I'm sure if there was anything in it, our chairman would be the first to let me know.

"I have a great relationship with him and ultimately he'll decide.

"Maybe in time, it will happen - I am ambitious and I want to do as well as I can in this job, but I must stress that I'm not looking to jump ship at the first sign of opportunity."
