Derek McInnes hails St Johnstone subtitutes

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes

St Johnstone boss Derek McInnes was thrilled by the impact made by his substitutes in the 2-0 win over Hibs.

Liam Craig and Marcus Haber scored the goals, while Andy Jackson also made life difficult for the visitors.

"All three substitutes did very well," McInnes told BBC Scotland. "They made a real impact but they boys they came on for all worked hard for the result.

"Liam is a very important player for us but he maybe doesn't have 90 minutes in him just now."

It was Craig who made the breakthrough with a thumping header from a Danny Grainger corner on 76 minutes, while Haber sealed a deserved victory in injury time.

"We know exactly what we get with Liam," added McInnes. "He gets goals for us and he gives us a nice balance.

"Andy Jackson was fantastic and Marcus Haber put himself about, won his headers, worked the centre-halves down and got his reward with a goal."

A second home win in the Scottish Premier League lifts the Saints above struggling Hibs into ninth spot and McInnes wants his players to build on their impressive display

"I said to the players 'don't leave it for someone else to get the ball over the line, make sure you're the one that makes the impact'," he explained.

"Last week we had a lot of territory, played a lot of good stuff but we needed to do more in the last third.

"There was a wee lull five minutes before we did score when it looked as if one or two of them were resigning themselves to the fact that it wasn't going to be our day.

"But it was important that we stayed positive and kept believing we were going to win the game.

"From the first minute I thought we looked very hungry and very determined to pick up the points.

"It's not nice to look at the league table when you are down there.

"It's at home we need to be strong and that's three wins now, two in the league, and that bodes well.

"We can take confidence from this, enjoy our weekend and come in ready to work again on Monday."
