St Johnstone have signed 33-year-old former Aston Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckelman on a two-year deal.

Enckelman featured as a trialist in Saturday's game against Real Valladolid and had expressed a desire to join the Scottish Premier League club.

The Finn will vie for the number one jersey with Graeme Smith at McDiarmid Park in the new season.

Enckelman said: "It'll be a friendly fight for the position and I am sure we will support each other."

The Finnish goalkeeper, capped 12 times for his country, was a free agent after being released by Cardiff City.

Enckelman began his career at his hometown club TPS Turku in 1995, enjoying a four-year spell there before joining Aston Villa.

Spells at Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City followed and he was released by the Welsh club at the end of last season.

"Once I had met the manager and the rest of the lads, it was not a hard decision to make," said Enckelman.

"I'm ready to play against Hearts if called to do so and am looking forward to the challenge."
