St Johnstone have signed the former Rangers and Hibernian forward Jonatan Johansson until January after he impressed in training.

The Finn was a free agent after leaving Hibernian where he managed to make just six starts in 10 appearances before having his contract terminated.

"He's still a first pick for Finland," said Saints boss Derek McInnes, who played with Johansson at Rangers.

"He's come in as we're struggling for strikers because of injury."

Johansson, 34, had been without a club since the close of the transfer window at the beginning of September.

However, he was still included in his country's recent international double-header against Wales and Germany, prior to which he had requested training facilities at McDiarmid Park.

"He's just won his 100th cap for Finland and he scored against Germany earlier this month in their World Cup qualifier," said McInnes.

"So he's still go that pedigree and quality and hopefully we can see that.

"He was on our doorstep and thankfully we've managed to get him in."

Johansson first arrived in Scottish football when he signed for Rangers in 1997 for £500,000.

He then spent six years with Charlton Athletic, and a two-year spell in Sweden with Malmo, before his compatriot Mixu Paatelainen brought him back to Scotland while he was manager of Hibernian.

However, just halfway into his 18-month deal in Edinburgh he was released having failed to make an impact.
