St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes and assistant Tony Doherty have extended their contracts until May 2011.

It follows a summer when McInnes was linked with former club West Brom and Watford after winning promotion from Division One.

"I never envisaged it being a problem," McInnes said. "The chairman told me the deal was there and I indicated I saw my future at St Johnstone.

"So it was never going to be an issue, but it's just good to get it sorted."

McInnes has also been praised for the quality of his team's play on their return to the Scottish Premier League after a seven-year exile.

"I was given the opportunity to manage the team two years ago and we managed to get up last season," he said.

"That was my remit and the players' remit and we managed to do that.

"Now we want to try to establish ourselves as an SPL club and that's part of my role now."

McInnes played down reports that he was close to leaving McDiarmid Park this summer.

"If you are doing well as a footballer out on the park, you will attract interest from other clubs," he said.

"But Tony and I always made it clear we wanted to give the SPL a go with the staff and players we have here at Saints.

"The chairman gave me the job when I was far from favourite. He must have seen something in me he liked and handed me the opportunity.

"That was important to me and we are striving to take the football club forward.

"This season, that means retaining our status in the SPL. There is still a lot to be done in taking this club as far as we want it to go."

Chairman Geoff Brown revealed that discussions had been ongoing for some time and had been "very amicable".

"This is in recognition of the work Derek has put in during his time at the football club," he said.
